Qua Literary and Fine Arts Magazine
Winter 2014 Submission Guidelines
Qua is the University of Michigan-Flint’s biannual student-run literary and fine arts magazine. Our mission is to promote the work of writers and artists in Flint and surrounding areas. For the winter 2014 issue, we are accepting submissions of fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and visual art. All submissions should be sent to email@example.com.
Our winter issue will include a full-color art section, and we are interested in visual art in any medium. Please submit art as a digital photograph, approximately 5×7” at a minimum of 300 DPI resolution. No low-resolution photographs please. In the body of your submission email, be sure to include the title, medium, size, date, and course created in (if applicable).
Written submissions should be sent as Microsoft Word attachments. For fiction and creative nonfiction, shorter pieces are preferred but not required. Because we are a small magazine, anything longer than 4,000 words, if accepted, may be published either completely on our website (umfqua.wordpress.com), or partially in print with access to the full story online. Pieces partially published in the magazine that conclude online will be accompanied by the web address to the full story. If you are not comfortable having your work published online, let us know when you submit.
All submissions should be sent to firstname.lastname@example.org, where they will be viewed anonymously, i.e. the editors will not know the author or artist of any submission unless selected for publication. To honor this anonymity, please remove your name from the manuscript itself (if you do not, the adviser will, but as a courtesy), but be sure to include it, along with the title of your work and whether or not you’re a student at UM Flint, in the body of your email. When saving your soon-to-be-submitted documents, please exclude your name from the document filename. Qua will correspond through email only, so frequently check the same one used to send us your work after the reading period ends.
Please use 12 point Times New Roman font. Prose should be typed double-spaced; poems may be either single- or double-spaced. Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but inform us immediately if your work is accepted elsewhere. Only send polished work. While typos and grammatical errors will not automatically lead to a rejection, they are duly considered. Show that you take your craft seriously, and editors will also take it seriously.
All submissions must be original and unpublished. If you are submitting several pieces at the same time, please attach them to your email as separate files (including poems). You may submit additional pieces at any time during the reading period, which begins January 1st and concludes February 3rd. You may send up to four pieces of work per issue; for example, two pieces of art, a poem, and a short story. We look forward to receiving your work.
**Submit to email@example.com by Monday, February 3rd at 11:59 PM**
